Is it a dust plume or steam?

With temperatures in the Angaston clinker kiln reaching 1500C, the emissions
from the combustion process present as a plume from the stack. The diagram
below helps to explain the difference between a steam plume from the stack
compared to a dust plume.

Steam

• A gap between the stack and plume.
• White in colour.
• On a windy day it can appear dense wrth a dark patch underneath, which is a reflection of ground colour.
• More noticable on cold days – just like our breath – and in the evenings when atmoshperic temperature drops.

Dust

• No gap between the stack and plume.
• White in colour.
• Particles will wave as they exit the stack – like a heatwave.
• Dust plume is continuous and won’t evaporate like steam.
